A home sauna has three costs, not one: the unit, the electrical work to power it, and the cents-per-session to run it. Plug-and-play infrared cabins can be a near-zero-install $1,000 purchase; a hardwired traditional or large infrared sauna can add hundreds to thousands in electrical work. The good news: running one is cheaper than a coffee.
1. The Purchase Price
- Entry infrared (1–2 person): roughly $1,000–$2,500. Plug-and-play, Canadian hemlock, basic carbon heaters.
- Premium infrared (full-spectrum, low-EMF): roughly $5,000–$9,000. Verified low EMF/ELF, full-spectrum heaters, better wood and warranties.
- Traditional & outdoor barrels: roughly $4,000–$12,000+ depending on size, wood, and heater.
2. The Electrical Install (the hidden cost)
This is where budgets get blown. What your sauna plugs into determines whether you pay an electrician at all.
- Plug & Play (120V/15A): $0. Plugs into a standard outlet. Most 1–3 person infrared saunas.
- Dedicated 120V (20A): ~$150–$400 for an electrician to add a dedicated breaker.
- Hardwired 240V (30A+): ~$300–$900 indoors, $500–$1,500+ for outdoor runs (trenching/conduit). Required by most traditional and large 4+ person infrared saunas.
3. The Running Cost
